White fillings can be used to restore teeth which have been affected by decay or replace silver fillings for aesthetic reasons. The main benefit of white fillings is cosmetic, however many people are also concerned about the risks of the mercury contained in silver fillings.

For aesthetic reasons, this type of filling is most often reserved for the front teeth, although they can be used for certain types of fillings on the back teeth. Composite material is a mixture of plastic and fine glass that can be matched to the colour of the tooth. Once the material is applied to the tooth, and shaped, the dentist will use an ultraviolet light to harden the material. These fillings tend to last about 5 years.
A potential negative is that they can shrink over time which can produce gaps. If left unchecked, this could lead to further tooth decay.
